druid

DruidSynge is one of the most ambitious undertakings in Irish theatre for many years. Over a period of eighteen months, Garry Hynes will direct all the plays of John Millington Synge, culminating in the presentation of the entire canon in the summer of 2005.

Following on from the success of the company's critically acclaimed production of The Playboy of the Western World earlier this year, Druid now continues the journey with major new productions of two more of Synge's comedies.

The Well of the Saints

Martin and Mary Doul are an old, blind couple of the roads. When a wandering saint offers them the miracle of their sight restored, they gladly accept but instead of finding joy and happiness, they discover a seeing world that is more complicated than they could ever have imagined.

The Tinker's Wedding

In addition to The Well of the Saints, Druid will present four special performances of The Tinker's Wedding. Sarah Casey, the Beauty of Ballinacree, has decided she wants the respectability of marriage to her fellow-tinker Michael Byrne. However, Michael believes it to be a ridiculous notion – and so too does his porter-loving mother. Both productions can be seen as separate shows, or alternatively as a double-bill.
