Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerord are one of the most influential creative teams working in modern theatre. In 1981, they founded Cheek by Jowl, a company which became synonymous with innovative yet faithful interpretations of classic works. The company quickly became a regular feature in the world's major festivals, leading to invitations to create work in the U.S., Vienna, the Avignon Festival and, most particularly, in Russia.

Throughout their career, they have worked particularly closely with the British Council and we are delighted to celebrate the Council's 70th anniversary with the presentation of two major works by Donnellan and Ormerod.

Othello is one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies and a pillar of the apex of his dramatic art. At the play's heart lies the simple love story of Desdemona and Othello, two people defying society in order to follow their own hearts. Their love is corroded, twisted and manipulated when the villainous Iago convinces the moor of his young bride's betrayal.

What distinguishes Othello from its dramatic peers is the role of its brilliantly drawn villain, whose amorality wreaks havoc in a world guided by patriarchal trust, honour, and reputation.

Co-produced by Cheek by Jowl and Théâtre du Nord (Théâtre National Lille Tourcoing Région Nord Pas-de-Calais and Lille 2004)
In association with Odeon-Théâtre de l'Europe Paris
