shining city

In Dublin a man comes to a counsellor seeking help. He claims to have seen the ghost of his recently deceased wife. But what begins as just an unusual encounter becomes a desperate struggle between the living and the dead – a struggle which will shape and define both men for the rest of their lives.

Produced by the Gate and the Royal Court, Shining City opened in London in June of this year and was hailed as “moving, compassionate, ingenious and absolutely gripping” (Daily Telegraph), an “absolutely stunning” new play (Daily Mail) and a ”beautifully acted production” (New York Times) that "lifted the hairs on my scalp" (Evening Standard). The Gate has had a long association with Conor McPherson following the Irish première of Dublin Carol (2000) and the world premières of Come On Over (2001) and Port Authority (2001), which opened at the New Ambassadors in London.

His other plays include This Lime Tree Bower and The Weir, the latter winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play, the Critics' Circle Award and the Evening Standard Award. Films include I Went Down, Saltwater and The Actors.
