Dublin Carol

Conor McPherson is one of the leading Irish playwrights of his generation. He built his career in the small theatres of Dublin, and burst onto the international scene with The Weir, which premiered at the Royal Court in London. It went on to become a massive hit on Broadway and in the West End and earned McPherson the Olivier, Critics Circle, Evening Standard and Stewart Parker Trust awards. He is already “heir to the great Irish tradition of absorbing tale-telling” (The Guardian) and “a distinctive talent to cherish” (Telegraph).

The Gate Theatre is proud to present the Irish premiere of his latest play Dublin Carol . Set in present day Dublin on Christmas Eve, undertaker John Plunkett takes a retrospective look at his own life, as the effect of the lives of people around him force honesty to come to the surface, revealing lost opportunities, a misused past and one last chance to make it right.

McPherson's first feature film as screenwriter and director, Saltwater (based on his play This Lime Tree Bower ), is on general release this September. As part of the Beckett on Film Project, he recently directed Endgame starring Michael Gambon and David Thewlis.
