The Inspector

Festival audiences fell in love with the creativity and romance of Footsbarn Travelling Theatre when they first played in Dublin ten years ago. Their productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream that year and The Odyssey in 1995 had audiences spellbound. Throughout this year's festival Footsbarn will pitch their new 500-seater tent in the exquisite Iveagh Gardens so that we can once again enter their fun-filled, magical world.

The jumping-off point for their latest production is Nikolai Gogol's The Government Inspector, a brilliant farce of larger-than-life characters wrapped up in small town corruption and snobbery. The company has adapted the play, in its trademark style, into a vibrantly theatrical production full of passion, colour and good humour.

Footsbarn was founded in Cornwall in the 1970s and has been based in France since 1990. The company's work is an integration of the cultural traditions of its diverse members — cast members in The Inspector hail from as far afield as Zaire, Poland and India. Fintan O'Toole has called Footsbarn “a theatre festival unto itself.”

With the support of the French Embassy.

Performed in English.
