Le Costume

"Theatre has no categories, it is about life. This is only the starting point, and there is nothing else truly fundamental, theatre is life" Peter Brook.

Peter Brook is widely regarded as the pre-eminent director of our time yet amazingly, his work has never been seen in this country. This will change in October when the Festival will present his acclaimed production of Le Costume.

Told with the greatest of simplicity by four actors, the production creates a vivid evocation of South Africa's Sophiatown in the 1950s, a place of gossip, music, dreams and drinking. The play is a bitter, beautiful account of lust, jealousy, penitence and a tragic failure of forgiveness.

Performed in French with English surtitles

"Without ever straining for effect, Brook's lustrous production affirms the unending the unending richness of theatrical simplicity"
Michael Billington The Guardian
