As its 1992 Irish Life Dublin Theatre Festival presentation the Gate will stage Maliere's classic comedy Tartuffe, a tale of religious hypocrisy and deceit. Tartuffe, a rogue posing as a pious puritan, has wormed his way into the admiration and afections of the gullible merchant, Orgon. Deaf to the warnings of his horritied family, Orgon promises his daughter Mariane in marraige to Tartuffe despite her already being betrothed to her true love Valere. Orgon's family decide they must expose the imposter.....

A comedy of manners, corruption and seduction, Tartuffe is as fresh today as when it was first staged in 1664. Tartuffe will be directed by Alan Stanford who, in 1991, staged the Gate's highly-acclaimed production of Romeo and Juliet.
