The action of TheTempest takes place on an island, a magical place inhabited only by Prospero, his daughter Miranda and strange creatures like the spirit Ariel and the half-man Caliban. To this place he lures those who once tormented him and sets in motion his plan of revenge. Island's production is a colourful and exotic evening that explores the possibilities of vengeance. This is a world made of the flotsam and jetsam of Prospero's magic - old fridges, neon lights, televisions and bones cover the space. In this strange island, half realm, half prison, Prospero conjures the downfall of his enemies only to realise that " The rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance". But this is a Prospero of contemporary Ireland and his contemplations have a uniquely Irish context - and these reverberate eerily with the history of Kilmainham Gaol.
