Jenufa tells the story of a village girl, abandoned by her handsome lover, who hides her pregnancy and then her child. Her step-mother, the local church warden, cares for her through the long Winter confinement but her deep affection leads to tragedy in Spring when, out of concern for the girl, she drowns the baby soon after birth. It's a stern tale which celebrates love as much as it condemns intolerance.
