Famine, by Tom Murphy, is regarded as one of the outstanding plays of modern Irish Theatre. Epic in quality, based on the events of the Great Famine it deals with a community's struggle to survive a great crisis. It is also about the nature of the Irish people todat - the 'survivors'.

The central character of Famine is John Connor, leader of his local community. The basis of his leadership is called into question by the circumstances of the Famine and as its effects take hold, we witness the unfolding of a tragedy not just for John Connor but for an entire community.
