Woyzeck

Critics and audiences hailed Woyzeck as Europe's theatre event of the year when it premiered in Copenhagen in May 2000. The Betty Nansen Theatre succeeded in reuniting Robert Wilson and Tom Waits to create a dazzling musical version of Georg Büchner's tale, unfolding in twelve tableaux, each accompanied by a rasping new Waits song.

In his visionary staging Wilson fills the stage with singers, actors and musicians bringing Waits' gritty bar-room songs to life with explosively colourful stage design.

Robert Wilson is one of the most influential artists of our time. His theatre feeds the soul with its immensity and grandeur. Susan Sontag said of him, "I can't think of any body of work as large or as influential. He is the great theatre career of our time".

From his 1973 debut album Closing Time to Rain Dogs, Tom Waits has been an inspiration to several generations of musicians. He remains decidedly outside and perversely inside the orbit of popular music. Together they have created a production of epic proportions, which is both an affirmation of the importance of humanity and an admission of its frailty.
