The Passion Machine was set up in 1984 to create and promote a wholly indigenous populist theatre that depicts, challenges and celebrates the contemporary Irish experience. The company produces only original work and has to date produced 22 new Irish plays.

Buddleia is a plant; an ornamental shrub commonly known as The Butterfly Bush. Elegant and ruthless, it runs riot whenever there is neglect. Buddleia is also a fable about modern Dublin; an offbeat and episodic depiction pf city life, redolent of much of The Passion Machine's work to date. The play is one journey through the physical and spiritual landscape of the city; an elegiac adn personal document ona troubled and changing society.
