Conversations on a Homecoming

Following the success of the Murphy Season at the Abbey last year comes the Lyric Theatre's remarkable production of Conversations on a Homecoming. Bringing together an unrivalled ensemble of northern actors, director Conall Morrison strikes to the heart of Murphy's story of lost dreams and faded youth.

Conversations is set in an East Galway bar in the 70's, where aspirations and ambitions personified by John F. Kennedy were once preached by the landlord and leader JJ.

The halcyon days have now passed and what was intended as a place where dreams could soar is now just another drinking hole. The arrival of Michael, the one who got away, gives vent to one last attempt to rekindle the spirit and optimism of the past.

The presentation of Conversations on a Homecoming marks the first visit of the Lyric Theatre to the Festival in eighteen years.

"What makes this a terrific piece of theatre is not just the hard, polished shell of schoolmasterly cynicism and atrophied intelligence Adrian Dunbar has constructed for Tom and the soft, vulnerable heart that beats beneath the too thin skin of Conleth Hill's Michael. It is that the chemistry between them really makes you feel that if only they could fuse together, some extraordinary happiness might emerge"
Fintan O'Toole, The Irish Times
