Uncle Vanya Show Image
The Gate has a long and rich association with Brian Friel and has premiered many of his plays over the past forty years, the most recent of which was The Home Place in 2005, which subsequently transferred to the West End. His affinity with the work of nineteenth-century Russian writers is manifest in his own fiction and drama, and in his acclaimed adaptations of works by Chekhov and Turgenev. Of these, the Gate has premiered his version of Chekhov’s short story Lady With a Little Dog, under the title The Yalta Game, as well as his version of The Bear after Chekhov and an original work, Afterplay, which is based on two of Chekhov’s characters.

Friel’s acclaimed version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya was first produced by the Gatein 1998. Set in a decaying Russian estate, run by Vanya and his niece Sonya, the arrival of Vanya’s brother-in-law and his beautiful second wife throws their lives into disarray when old loyalties and new loves come into conflict. Chekhov’s masterpiece of human emotion and desire is brought to life beautifully by Friel in this searing and memorable work.

"Brian Friel’s version shows a great dramatist’s imagination being fired by his admiration for another. The result is thrilling: alchemy at work." Sunday Times
