Glengarry Glen Ross

A great American theatre company take on a great American play - Steppenwolf's production of David Mamet's scalding comic masterpiece is American theatre at its very best.

It's 1984 in a run down real estate office where closing a sale can mean a brand new Cadillac but losing one can mean losing it all. Desperate times make for desperate men and Richard 'Ricky' Roma, "The Machine" Levene, and the other relics of this bygone age are trying to grind out a living by pushing plots of land on reluctant buyers in a never-ending scramble for their fair share of the American dream.

Mamet's elegy to a kind of manhood made obsolete by economic Darwinism is perfect territory for Steppenwolf. The dialogue crackles and spits in what is truly an actors' play with its heart in Chicago.

In a faultless ensemble Mike Nussbaum, who starred in the original Broadway production in 1985, turns in an astonishing performance as veteran salesman Shelly Levene.

This is the first major US revival of the play since its premiere and the Festival dates will be the only performances outside of Chicago.

"...fierce and fresh in its delivery, it retains the power to shock and surprise us anew, a great play in a sensational production"
