Marina Carr turns her poetic vision to one of the epic themes of the dramatic tradition in an exploration of power and corruption in contemporary Irish society. Fermoy Fitzgerald, a Midlands TD, haunted by ghosts of the past and enthralled by dreams of the future will sacrifice everything in pursuit of political power - even the lives of his children and wives.

Imbued with a singular sense of his destiny Fitzgerald inhabits a distinctive moral universe that is desolate, literal and retributive. On the day of his daughter Ariel's sixteenth birthday, he makes a terrifying bargain with God. But a bargain struck can bear a heavy price when primal instincts vie with order and justice for supremacy.
