Hibiki Show Image
Winner of the Olivier Award for best new dance production, Hibiki is a work of unparalleled tranquillity and simplicity. As water slowly drips from suspended glass urns, six dancers, with heads shaven and torsos bare, uncurl slowly from lotus leaves to begin their ritualistic dance, resulting in a performance of astounding poetic beauty.
Set against the background of a haunting score from Yoichiro Yoshikawa and the jazz pianist and composer Takashi Kako, the dancers come to life, using their restrained energy to hypnotic effect.
Sankai Juku, Japan’s premier Butoh company, has performed in 40 countries, and visited more than 700 cities around the world. Now they visit the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival for the first time, with this mesmerising piece of Butoh dance theatre.
