Lifeboat Tilt

Beth: We didn't let go. Why didn't we let go?
Bess: Well we couldn't give up, could we?
Beth: That's right, we were not in the business of giving up.

Lifeboat is the extraordinary true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings. It is a story of courage, a story of survival, a story of enduring friendship.

On Friday, September 13th, 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war-torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived.

Two fifteen-year-old girls, Bess Walder and Beth Cummings, spent nineteen terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. They willed each other to survive. Now, over sixty years later, they remain firm friends.

Winner of the TMA Award for Best New Play for Children and Young People, and the Barclays Stage Award for Best Show for Children and Young People, Lifeboat is the heart-warming, moving and often funny account of the two girls' lives and determination to survive.

Suitable for ages 8+

"AS CHILDREN'S THEATRE, LIFEBOAT IS A PEACH. AS THEATRE FOR GROWN UPS, IT'S A DELIGHT . . . A GLORIOUSLY ENTERTAINING JOURNEY” - Daily Mail
