The Lieutenant of Inishmore

"Wee Thomas was a friendly cat. He would always say hello to you, were you to see him sitting on a wall. He won't be saying hello no more, God bless him. Not with that lump of a brain gone."

Martin McDonagh's hilarious new play was premiered by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon to enormous critical acclaim. It went on to cause a storm in London's West End, and won the Best Comedy Award at the 2003 Olivier Awards.

The play's hero, "Mad Padraic", is a dangerously loose cannon who has formed his own splinter group within the INLA. When he is lured back to Inishmore by the news that his beloved cat is poorly, Padraic sets in train a series of murderous events. A hugely enjoyable, viciously savage farce, the play shows brutality and maudlin sentimentality living side by side in the minds of extremists.

Martin McDonagh's previous works include The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Lonesome West.
