Battle of Stalingrad new

The Battle of Stalingrad, which proved to be a major success when it played at the Lincoln Center in New York, represents a stunning mix of visual art, poetry, cinema, and drama.

Inspired by the front-line accounts of a war reporter, Tbilisi Marionette Theatre portrays this historical event in a way that nobody ever has before. The production illustrates a pocket-sized world that shifts with fascinating ease from depictions of thousands of soldiers and ants, to horses and citizens being conveyed through the factory of war.

This complex choreography of puppets and props in The Battle of Stalingrad gives a distilled take on the human dimension of the fiercest battle of World War II. Intricate marionettes tell the stories of various individuals touched by the events of battle, creating a universal lament for man's tragic nature. Gabriadze's sad-eyed, delicate puppets share the stage with some remarkably surreal, small-scale effects.

Deftly walking the tightrope between profundity and absurdity, this highly impressionistic work uses marionettes to create an extraordinary, emotionallycharged experience. This Stalingrad will leave you with an aching throat and a twinkle in your eye.

Performed in Georgian with pre-recorded English voice-over.
