I Am My Own Wife

I Am My Own Wife
is the international smash hit and winner of numerous prestigious Broadway awards.  This wildly popular play swept the critics and audiences of New York City off their feet, with more than 500,000 people coming to see this incredible play. Now, it's Dublin's turn, prior to a West End run.

From the Obie Award-winning author of Quills comes this acclaimed one-man show, which explores the astonishing true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a transvestite and celebrated antiques dealer, who successfully navigated the two most oppressive regimes of the past century - the Nazis and the Communists. While openly gay and defiantly in drag, von Mahlsdorf was both hailed as a cultural hero and accused of colluding with the Stasi.

In the play, Wright travels from New York to Berlin to interview Charlotte, and is instantly enchanted by her colourful accounts of overcoming such obstacles as an oppressive father and a homophobic SS commander. But when the German press begins circulating reports that Charlotte was an informant for the Stasi before the Berlin Wall fell, Wright's idealised portrait is challenged.

Jefferson Mays received universal critical acclaim for his performance, as he morphs seamlessly between Charlotte and each of the 34 other personas. In addition to a Tony, it brought him a Drama Desk Award, an Obie Award, a Lucille Lortel Award, a Theatre World Award and a Drama League Award.

“Jefferson Mays' bull's-eye performance is amazing, bordering on the miraculous. No mere tour-de-force but a play of considerable moral gravity. Everything about I Am My Own Wife is outstanding!”
Wall Street Journal

“Don't even think about missing it - Jefferson Mays is unforgettable…”
The Washington Post

“The most stirring new work to appear on Broadway... a story that is both moving and intellectually absorbing, a staging that is both careful and lovely, and a performance that is a true tour-de-force”
New York Times

“The dramatic event of the year… an amazing theatrical experience”
New York Post
