09 Tales of Ballycumber L

“Here, now, listen, I’ll tell you a tale...”

Daffodils are in bloom as dawn breaks over the foothills of Ballycumber, ushering in hope for a new day and stirring the ghosts of a past fraught with sorrow, anguish and emptiness.

Setting out in search of advice, young Evans Stafford calls to the home of a friend and strong-minded traditionalist, Nicholas Farquhar. The following morning the local boy is found bloodied, note in hand. What is said during their brief encounter to compel him to this violent act?

As Farquhar struggles to come to terms with his actions and their devastating consequences, he discovers that his memories and words are governed by a force greater than himself – a buried history that propels both men towards a desperate and inevitable climax.

This world premiere from twice Booker-nominated and winner of the 2008 Costa Book of the Year award, Sebastian Barry, is a startling portrayal of two unlikely companions united beyond their own comprehension, both haunted by the plague of solitude and the Tales of Ballycumber.

Tales of Ballycumber is an Abbey Theatre commission.

It will blow you away because Sebastian Barry is one of Ireland’s finest writers whose last play The Pride of Parnell Street was an undoubted highlight of the 2007 Festival.
