The Hand

Donal O'Kelly is one of the most original and distinctive talents working in Irish theatre. Over the past ten years, he has appeared in many films including Roddy Doyle's The Van; has directed for Calypso Theatre Company and toured the world with his extraordinary creation Catalpa.

Dublin Theatre Festival is delighted to present the latest work by this extraordinary writer, director and performer.

In The Hand, O'Kelly draws on his skills as a master storyteller to fuse language and music seamlessly into what he calls 'gig theatre'. With the precision of theatre and the informality of a gig, different elements are drawn together to tell a remarkable story. He is joined on stage by flautist Ellen Cranitch, percussionist Brian Fleming and actress Sorcha Fox.

The Hand tells of a family's slide from the comforts of middle class life to the harsh realities of 1920's Dublin. Told through the eyes and ears of Hector and Lil, the innocent yet enterprising young children of the house, it is a moving and very funny tale which beautifully evokes Dublin city in the early part of the twentirth century.
