In October 1928, The Gate Theatre staged its first ever production, Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt. The Gate's 70th anniversary production will be the world premiere of Brian Friel's compelling new version of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya.

Uncle Vanya is set in a small decaying Russian estate run by Vanya and his niece, Sonya. The calm tenor of their lives is thrown into disarray by the arrival of Vanya's brother-in-law and his beautiful wife when old loyalties and sudden new loves come into conflict and tear their lives apart.
