The Woman Who Walked into Doors

Critics and audiences hailed The Woman who Walked into Doors as a major event in modern opera when it premiered in Antwerp in 2001. Composed by Kris Defoort, the renowned Belgian jazz composer, the opera is a stunning interpretation of the novel by Roddy Doyle. Dublin Theatre Festival and Opera Ireland have come together to bring this exceptional production back home to the city in which it is set.

The production brings together soprano Claron McFadden, actress Jacqueline Blom, a massive moving video screen which acts as a window to the outside world, and the thirty musicians of the Prometheus Ensemble and the jazz group, Dreamtime.

Roddy Doyle's novel tells the moving story of Paula Spencer. A stream of memories is triggered when Paula is told her husband has been killed. Visions of falling in love, getting married, having children, and the abuse and emotional despair she suffered at the hands of her husband Charlo burst forth. Although Paula's struggle is a dark and solitary one, The Woman who Walked into Doors is ultimately a story of courage and strength.

"The music breathes the same merciless straightforwardness as the video and raw text, which makes this opera so incisive"
