Thomas Ostermeier

Born in Soltau in 1968. 1992-96, studied directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst “Ernst Busch”, Berlin. 1990-91, acted in the “Faust”-project by Einar Schleef at the Academy of Fine Arts (Hochschule der Künste), Berlin. 1993-94, assistant director and actor with Manfred Karge in Weimar and at the Berliner Ensemble. In 1995 he directed “Die Unbekannte” by Alexander Blok in accordance with Meyerhold‘s system of biomechanics. In 1996 he directed “Recherche Faust / Artaud” at the BAT, Berlin. 1996-99, artistic director of the Baracke at the Deutsches Theater, Berlin. Productions there included “Fat Men in Skirts”, “Knives in Hens” (invitation to the Theatertreffen, Berlin), “Mann ist Mann”, “Suzuki”, “Shopping and Fucking” (invitation to the Theatertreffen, Berlin), “Below the Belt”, “The Blue Bird”. In 1998 the Baracke was nominated “Theatre of the Year”. 1999, directed “Disco Pigs” and “Fireface” at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg. His final production at the Baracke was “Suzuki II” by Alexej Schipenko.

Since September 1999, Ostermeier has been artistic director at the Schaubühne. Productions there include: Norén´s “Personenkreis 3.1”, Kane´s “Crave”, von Mayenburg´s “Parasites”, Fosse´s “The Name”, Churchill´s “This is a Chair”, Büchner´s “Danton‘s Death”, Srbljanovic’s “Supermarket”, Dresser’s “Better Days”, Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House/Nora” (invitation to the Theatertreffen 2003), Kroetz’ “Request Concert”, Büchner’s “Woyzeck”, Woudstra’s “The Exterminating Angel”, Wedekind’s “Lulu”, Sarah Kane’s “Blasted”, Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” (invited to the Theatertreffen 2006), O’Neill’s “Mourning becomes Electra” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” loosely based on Shakespeare (a coproduction with the Hellenistic Festival of Athens, directed by Thomas Ostermeier and Constanza Macras).

In 2002 he directed Marieluise Fleisser’s “Der starke Stamm” at the Kammerspiele in Munich and “The Girl on the Sofa” (Jon Fosse) at the Edinburgh International Festival. In 2004 he directed Ibsen’s “The Master Builder” at the Vienna Burgtheater.

He was appointed ‘artiste associé’ for the Festival d’Avignon 2004.
